The cruelty behind a carton of eggs: a look into India’s egg industry
Animal Equality’s team in India has released a new investigation exposing the egg industry. The footage reveals the systemic cruelty inflicted upon hens in factory farming. Our team targeted 19 egg farms across the states of Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
Hens endure unimaginable conditions in cages barely larger than two sheets of paper. With four to eight animals crammed into these tiny spaces, they are stressed, trampled, and deprived of the basic rights to space and comfort. Huge piles of waste accumulate under the cages, causing feather loss and painful irritations. Despite obvious distress, sick hens are left without veterinary care.

Hens are intelligent and social animals who naturally live about eight years. But hens raised on factory farms live an average of only a year and a half. Every feeling-being deserves a life filled with companionship and love, free from suffering. Embrace cruelty-free alternatives to eggs to show compassion and avoid contributing to their suffering. The egg industry
will never show
you these images
even if this
is the reality
of who is behind
a carton of eggs.
Animal Equality
is exposing
India's egg industry
with a
new undercover
investigation.
Our team visited
19 egg farms
across the country.
On these farms,
the hens cages
are no larger
than two sheets
of paper.
4 to 8 animals
are crammed
into these
tiny spaces.
They become
stressed
and trample
each other
as they try
to move around.
These animals
will never have
the space
to spread
their wings,
and their feet
will become sore,
cracked,
and deformed
from standing
on sharp
wire floors.
Each overcrowded cage
is stacked on
top of another.
The litter
is collected
in huge piles
under the cages.
The waste piles
are only
disposed of once
every few weeks.
It is common
for hens
to suffer from
feather loss,
abrasions, and
skin irritations
from the high
concentration
of ammonia
in the litter
and from
rubbing against
the sharp
wire cages.
Even though
many hens
are sick
and injured,
little to no
veterinary care
is provided
to them.
Sick hens are
left to die
a slow,
agonizing death.
These animals
don't deserve
this fate.
Hens are
maternal,
social,
and intelligent
animals.
They experience
a wide range
of emotions
and can solve
complex problems.
Like humans,
these mothers
are fierce
protectors
of their babies
and nurture
them proudly.
They even talk
to their chicks
while they are
still in
the egg.
Yet we choose
to harm these
feeling beings
for a carton
of eggs.
You can protect
hens from
this cruelty
by simply
replacing eggs
with plant-based foods.

animals off
your plate.
