Q1 2025 IMPACT REPORT
Three months in,
already transforming lives.
This is your compassion at work…
Dear animal advocate,
As we look back on this quarter, I am grateful for your incredible support. You have driven remarkable progress for animals. From advancing Mexico’s first national animal protection law to launching Love Veg Latino, your compassion creates lasting change. Together, we’re ending cruel practices—from male chick killing in Italy to force-feeding in the UK—and transforming the lives of millions of animals.
Thank you for trusting Animal Equality to be your voice for animals!

Q1 HIGHLIGHTS
Thanks to you, Mexico is closer than ever to its first national animal protection law! You amended Mexico’s Constitution last year, giving Congress the power to create this new law. Now, we’re joining congressional forums to ensure it passes and includes protections for farmed animals.

“Today we’re not merely debating a law—we’re defining our relationship with millions of sentient beings.”
—Isabel Franco, Legislative Analysis Coordinator at Animal Equality
We’ve introduced Love Veg Latino, a vibrant hub where plant-based eating meets Latino culture and flavors. Join us to explore delicious Latin American recipes, access a free ecookbook and Spanish resources on plant-based living.

I hope Love Veg Latino inspires our community to embrace plant-based cooking for the animals, their health, and the joy of new flavors.

Love Veg, Animal Equality’s plant‑based program
Choosing plant-based food is the best way to end animal suffering. Join Love Veg for recipes and tips to guide your plant-based journey.
You are at the forefront of a global movement to make plant-based eating accessible and exciting. In Mexico, you fostered a partnership between Love Veg and Las Colmenas—government-run centers for underserved communities—bringing free plant-based cooking workshops to families throughout 2025. We’re expanding from 26 workshops in 2024 to over 60 in 2025!

In Spain, you are advocating for the government to introduce plant-based options in schools for students who request them. Meanwhile, in India, you’ve engaged nearly 600 students through informative talks and materials.
Issues like how chickens are dying and not able to carry their own weight have been shown. I will tell people at meat shops not to kill chickens. Even if they don’t listen to me, I will try 100% from my side to convince them.

END FACTORY FARMING
Factory farms confine hens, mutilate piglets, and separate calves from their mothers, leading to their painful deaths in slaughterhouses. Together, we will put an end to this cruelty.
Your advocacy is making a significant impact worldwide. In Spain, you led the government to initiate action against the pig farm we exposed last year. In Germany, you’re championing the “Animal Welfare is Non-Negotiable” campaign, demanding that the next federal government take a concrete approach to animal protection.
Last year, your investigation exposed violence at the Belli slaughterhouse in Italy, prompting us to file a formal complaint. Since then, authorities have followed up with their own investigation. Meanwhile, we have joined a legal action against the European Commission at the EU Court of Justice. The case challenges the Commission’s failure to fulfill its 2021 promise to phase out cages by 2027, demanding a clear deadline for cage-ban legislation.

Your influence has extended to Scotland, where you co-hosted a Parliamentary event. At this event, you advocated for stronger farmed fish protections–including legislation for fish slaughter. In India, you revealed severe cruelty in the goat meat industry through a new investigation.

In recognition of your investigative efforts, the Tokyo International Foto Awards delivered a bronze to Aitor Garmendia. Garmendia’s powerful photograph was taken during an Animal Equality investigation at Asturian slaughterhouses.
END CAGES FOR PIGS AND HENS
Farmers confine millions of mother pigs and hens in tiny cages where they can’t move freely. Despite bans in some states and countries, many animals still suffer from this cruelty.
Thanks to your support, our campaign against Ahold Delhaize (parent company of Food Lion, Giant, and Stop & Shop) is gaining momentum! Protests and digital activism across Europe and the U.S. are pushing the company to honor its promise: eliminating cages for hens and pregnant pigs in its U.S. supply chain.

Your global impact continues to grow: in Spain, Pastisart Group committed to stop using eggs from caged hens worldwide, impacting 260,000 animals. In India, major hotels like St. Regis Mumbai have entirely eliminated eggs from caged hens. Companies like Fairfield by Marriott and Hyatt Regency Riverfront are now transitioning away from them.
In Brazil, the Blue Tree Hotels’ CEO acknowledged that your campaigns have made cage-free policies a priority in discussions across the hotel industry. Together, we’re transforming how businesses treat animals!

END MALE CHICK KILLING
Male chicks in the egg industry are killed because they cannot lay eggs and cannot be raised for meat. In-ovo sexing technology offers an alternative by identifying the sex of embryos before hatching, preventing male chicks from being born.
After discussions with Animal Equality in Brazil, Accor Americas became the world’s first hotel chain to commit to ending male chick killing in their supply chain. This will spare over 3 million chicks per year in the Americas.
In Rome, we amplified your voice for animals by projecting it onto the Colosseum. Your projection urged the Italian government to enforce its 2026 ban on male chick killing without delay or loopholes. Protests and mobile billboards across the city accompanied this.

END FORCE-FEEDING
The foie gras industry force-feeds ducks and geese, causing their livers to swell up to ten times their normal size. These diseased livers are then sold as foie gras.
In Spain, you supported a new proposal in Congress to ban force-feeding ducks and geese for foie gras production. Meanwhile, in the UK, Steve Reed promised to ban foie gras imports before the 2024 elections. Now, as a member of Parliament, he has not followed through. In response, we protested outside Crystal Palace stadium–his favorite team–using a bloodied soccer ball the size of a diseased bird liver. You are pushing leaders to deliver for animals!

END HORSE SLAUGHTER
Horses, like dogs and cats, are often cherished as companions. However, every year, thousands of U.S. horses are sent to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered for their meat.
The SAFE Act was reintroduced in the U.S. Senate this February, aiming to end the export of American horses for slaughter. You can make a difference—contact your representatives and urge them to support the SAFE Act.
Similarly, in Italy, a new bill has been proposed to classify horses as companion animals. If passed, this law would align their status more closely with that of dogs and cats. This is a vital step toward ending horse slaughter in the country.
