Major brands under fire for lagging on cage-free commitments

Animal Equality has joined a global campaign to expose major companies breaking their promises to ban cages for hens. Will they finally be held accountable?

Update 11/11/24: Colombina has officially reinstated its global cage-free commitment and is now reporting 40% across all brands. They have also refreshed their commitment and pledge to be globally cage-free by 2027. Colombina uses 13,464,000 eggs per year, meaning that a fulfilled cage-free commitment would affect the lives of nearly 48,000 hens.

Lai Sun Dining has also officially reinstated its global cage-free commitment and is reporting 90% progress globally.

Wagamama has reported that they have been free-range in the UK since 2022, are on track to be 100% in the US by the end of 2024 and in Europe by the end of 2025. They have also reaffirmed their commitment to achieving 100% cage-free in Asia and the Middle East by 2025, though we recognize that timelines in these regions may need to be adjusted. They will work with the Open Wing Alliance to set realistic and ambitious goals for each market, if needed. Wagamama’s commitment to cage-free eggs will impact around 40,000 hens per year.

Norwegian Cruise Line remains a target of this campaign.

Animal Equality has teamed up with the Open Wing Alliance (OWA) for a global campaign, exposing four major brands for lagging on their cage-free commitments.

Despite pledging to eliminate cages, Colombina, Lai Sun Dining, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Wagamama still allow hens to suffer in cramped conditions.

OWA–a global coalition dedicated to ending the abuse of hens– released a report in September called Fair and Fowl: Global Companies Edition. The report reveals which companies are failing to report on their cage-free promises. It calls on these brands to publicly share their progress, as companies like Pizza Express and Royal Caribbean have already done.

The U.S. campaign is focusing on Norwegian Cruise Line, the largest and most recognizable of the four. By taking action now, you can help hold them accountable for their broken promises for hens.
