Animal Equality, in collaboration with various animal protection groups, unveiled the ‘Brazil Without Cages’ campaign at the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo this November. The campaign supports a federal bill which would ban the confinement of animals used for food, feathers, and fur production.

The campaign launch was attended by a state deputy and a federal deputy, with the latter authoring the proposed bill. Model and activist Luisa Mell acted as the Master of Ceremonies for the event.

Renowned Brazilian singer and actress Xuxa–along with husband, singer, and actor Junno– have stepped up as ambassadors for the campaign. They released a video urging the public to support the initiative, highlighting the cruelty of extreme confinement faced by animals in factory farms. The couple previously collaborated with Animal Equality, releasing an egg farm investigation in 2023.

For me and Junno, it is very important to contribute to the animal cause, and this campaign raised awareness by touching on a very controversial point, which people don’t want to see: that animals spend their entire lives trapped in tiny spaces before being slaughtered. We are talking about beings that have sensitivity and intelligence.

The launch of ‘Brazil Without Cages’ coincides with a surge in support for animal protections among Brazilians. According to a survey commissioned by the National Forum for Animal Protection and Defense and carried out by the Datafolha Institute, 88% of those interviewed expressed their concern for animals.

Ending cages for animals in the United States

Animal Equality’s global efforts against extreme confinement also extend to the United States. In 2023, the organization launched a campaign against Denny’s, a diner chain that abandoned its decade-old commitment to phase out gestation crates in its supply chain.

These gestation crates confine pregnant mother pigs to cages that restrict their movement, leaving them unable to turn around or take more than a step forward for most of their lives. Gestation crates have been banned in eleven U.S. states, the European Union, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia.

Animal advocates across the nation protested against Denny’s cruelty, staging demonstrations from Los Angeles to New York City. Animal Equality even took out a billboard in the iconic Times Square, which featured a video of a pig trapped in a crate, begging to be freed. However, despite months of campaigning, Denny’s response amounted to an obscene gesture directed at peaceful protesters in Kansas City.

Despite this, consumers continue to rally, taking online action and urging others to join. Thousands have also signed Animal Equality’s petition to ban factory farming across the nation, which would protect cows, chickens, and other farmed animals from similar cruelty.

You can end this cruelty! Please sign our petition calling for ending factory farming in the United States.

The rise of the plant-based movement

Amidst the ongoing campaign, there is a growing shift toward plant-based eating in the United States. With millions opting for plant proteins over meat, dairy, and eggs, supporting the plant-based movement has become more accessible than ever.

Love Veg offers resources, including a free eBook, tips for transitioning, and a collection of compassionate recipes, encouraging individuals to put compassion into action.
