Kroger’s CEO Greg Foran confronted by Animal Equality advocates over abuse of hens
Shortly after 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7th, Animal Equality advocates challenged Kroger CEO Greg Foran at the 4500 Montgomery Road Kroger store in Norwood over the company’s broken promise to eliminate cages for hens. Foran remained silent and did not respond to their questions.
In 2016, Kroger promised to eliminate cages for hens by 2025. In 2022, the company abandoned that promise. Meanwhile, major competitors, including Ahold Delhaize, Target, and Costco, have made significant progress toward eliminating cages.

Approximately 8 million hens remain locked in cages because of Kroger; the cages are so small they are unable to spread their wings
“Kroger’s competitors are eliminating cages. Why isn’t Kroger? Greg Foran leads a company that promised to end this cruelty and then broke its word. This morning, when asked directly about that abuse, he refused to answer. Millions of hens remain trapped in cages, unable even to spread their wings because of Greg Foran’s lack of integrity. Kroger’s leadership owes the public an answer,” said Sharon Núñez, President and Co-founder of Animal Equality.
Since May 2026, Animal Equality has organized more than 100 protests and public actions against Kroger in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Holland, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Italy, and England. Despite repeated requests, Kroger has yet to engage meaningfully with the organization.
Animal Equality is calling on Greg Foran to meet with its leadership and establish a credible plan to eliminate cages for hens. The organization will continue its campaign until Kroger takes responsibility for eliminating cages.
