Kroger’s failed cage-free commitment drives an international campaign
Since launching in May, Animal Equality’s campaign calling on Kroger to fulfill its cage-free commitment has generated pressure across the United States and around the world.
Protests and other actions have taken place at Kroger stores, its corporate headquarters, Kroger-sponsored events, and companies with ties to Kroger’s leadership. To date, these actions have drawn nearly 1,000 protest appearances worldwide.
Why is Animal Equality protesting at Dell and PVH Corp.?
Kroger’s board members receive six figures in annual compensation.
According to a June 2026 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, effective July 1, 2026, Kroger’s non-employee directors are eligible to receive an annual cash retainer of $115,000 and Kroger stock grants valued at approximately $215,000. Ron Sargent, Kroger’s Non-Executive Chairman, is eligible for an additional annual stock grant valued at approximately $250,000 for his service as chairman. This means Sargent is eligible for approximately $580,000 in annual compensation under these stated terms.
These are the people with the power to act on Kroger’s broken cage-free commitment. They also hold influential positions at companies around the world.
Animal Equality’s campaign has targeted those corporate connections with protests, letter deliveries, and other actions putting Kroger’s broken cage-free commitment in front of audiences and decision-makers far beyond Kroger’s Cincinnati headquarters.
