Kroger promised to go 100% cage-free by 2025.
Instead, the company has backed away from that promise, saying that moving faster to cage-free eggs would increase costs and place a burden on customers facing economic challenges.
But that explanation raises important questions.
Why has Kroger chosen to move away from its commitment when other major retailers, restaurants, and food companies continue to advance their cage-free commitments despite facing similar economic pressures, supply chain challenges, and avian influenza outbreaks?
Has Kroger considered absorbing some or all of the additional costs of cage-free sourcing rather than delaying its commitment? What alternatives did the company consider? And why has Kroger chosen a different path from companies that are continuing to move forward?
