Investigations
Animal Equality in India investigates 19 egg farms
During an investigation inside 19 egg farms across India, Animal Equality found hens with deformities crammed into cages the size of two sheets of printer paper. Many died slow, painful deaths as feces piled up beneath their cages. The findings were a clear violation of an Indian Supreme Court ruling–which guarantees basic freedoms for all animals–as well as public demands for increased animal protections.
Animal Equality in Spain Releases New Footage Inside Pig Farms
Despite many in Spain advocating for a ban on cages, Animal Equality’s investigative footage shows the ongoing and extreme confinement of mother pigs. The footage also exposed the mutilation of piglets without anesthesia, including the cutting of their tails. These tails were found scattered on the floor and left in buckets. Meanwhile, the rotting bodies of dead piglets littered the farm.
Animal Equality in Spain Investigates the Pig Farming Industry
During an investigation inside five pig farms, Animal Equality in Spain found pigs with inflamed, pus-filled wounds, prolapsed uteruses and rectums, swollen genitals, lameness, mutilations, dead rats and maggots, and pigs nibbling on the carcasses of other pigs. This investigation release focused on the fattening stage, which takes place after weaning.
Behind the Carton of Eggs: Brazil Hen Investigation
Animal Equality in Brazil conducted an investigation into hens factory farms, including four farms and a specialized hen slaughterhouse. Over 95% of hens in Brazil are kept in caged systems, where each bird has less space than a sheet of paper. With 13 birds per cage, investigators have documented cannibalism, extreme heat stress, various injuries, and disease.
Richa Moorjani Joins Animal Equality in Dairy Investigation
Animal Equality in the U.S. released a new undercover investigation into India’s dairy industry. The investigation featured celebrated actress and activist Richa Moorjani, who presented the findings and shares an important message about who is behind every glass of milk and dairy product. The release shows evidence of the suffering of cows and buffalos from around the world, including in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Mexico.
Drone Footage Shows Life & Death of Fish on UK Slaughter Boats
In late 2022, Animal Equality’s investigators carried out an extensive two-month investigation of the Scottish salmon and trout farming industry using drones, revealing the realities of life and death for farmed fish. Our footage reveals a number of concerning incidents, including overcrowding in the fish farms, as well as fish being violently thrown, arriving on the slaughter boats battered and bloody, being left to suffocate and being killed while conscious.
The Short But Harsh Life of Chickens
Never-before-seen footage by Animal Equality in Mexico highlights the systemic problems within factory farming which causes significant suffering of chickens. The images were obtained by undercover investigators inside a chicken slaughterhouse in Jalisco, Mexico in 2016. The images shown are of a similar fate endured by nearly 8 billion chickens in the United States every year.
The Secret Slaughterhouses of Brazil
As the Brazilian government moves to give slaughterhouses the ability to regulate themselves, Animal Equality exposes how decreasing oversight will only increase animal cruelty. These images are from illegal slaughterhouses in Brazil—the conditions of which give a glimpse into the future under the Self-Control Bill.
Investigation Into A “Quality” Pig Farm in Northern Italy
Animal Equality captures footage inside a large pig farm in Lombardy, Italy. This is part of a series of investigations since 2019 that reveal the suffering of animals on a farm that supplies products labeled “made-in-Italy excellence.” Footage shows pigs with sores, cysts and wounds, and dying pigs left lying on the floor in their feces and urine without care. The bodies of some dead piglets were torn apart with heads, legs and other body parts scattered around the farm. Investigators also found buckets of rotting animal remains. Animal Equality is calling for prompt action by the authorities to press charges against the farm.
Investigation Into the Live Transport of Animals in Mexico
For the first time, Animal Equality has investigated the live transport of animals in Mexico. The images captured by undercover investigators were obtained between 2016 and 2018, showing the inhumane conditions in which pigs, chickens and cows are transported to farms and slaughterhouses. Among the findings were serious violations of the Official Mexican Standard that regulates the transport of animals. These guidelines are meant to reduce the suffering of animals. But as Animal Equality investigators found, these mandates are rarely enforced and animals suffer abuse and cruelty.
