Approximately One Million Baby Chickens Spared From Cruelty So Far in 2020
At the beginning of this year, we helped secure multiple commitments to The Better Chicken Commitment from major restaurant chains. Along with coalition members, we worked with executives at White Castle and Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants, to secure policies that positively impacted approximately one million baby birds per year.
Michigan Passes Law Protecting 10 Million Hens Per Year
As part of a coalition, Animal Equality helped pass legislation in the State of Michigan to ban the egg industry’s confinement of hens in cages and to require enrichments in their new cage-free environments that allow the hens to engage in natural behaviors like perching and dust-bathing. Upon taking effect, the new law will also require any eggs sold within the state to be produced under conditions that meet these standards.
Historic Initiative in Mexico
In response to the findings of Animal Equality’s investigation into Jalisco’s slaughterhouses and after a year of campaigning in the Mexican state, Jalisco’s Congress voted for legislation which now decrees that cruelty against farmed animals in the state is now a crime. The historic initiative, originally presented by deputy Salvador Caro Cabrera, makes cruelty to farmed animals a crime punishable by up to 4 years in prison and prevents those found guilty of working with farmed animals for 3 years. In the case of a repeat crime, it also bars abusers from working with animals again.
4.3 million hens freed from cages
After an Animal Equality’s investigation revealed shocking scenes of suffering filmed on a Noble Foods caged-hen farm in Dorset, United Kingdom, the company has announced a commitment to solely cage-free egg production by 2025. We are incredibly proud to have played an important part in this landmark decision and congratulate our friends at The Humane League UK for their tireless efforts over the past six months to make this happen.
Dog slaughterhouse closed
A total of 33 stalls belonging to the ‘Three Birds of Dali Markets’ and a dog slaughterhouse, situated in Nanhai – Foshan, have been closed by Chinese authorities after Animal Equality‘s investigation, highlighted the illegal and cruel trade in such establishments and thanks to the collaboration of Volunteer Centre of Guangzhou.
Historic sentence for animal cruelty
After we revealed horrific animal cruelty on El Escobar farm, the trial against the four defendants finds them guilty and sentences them to the longest sentence allowed under law.
