Animal Activists Approach Denny’s Executives at Golf Game in Texas
During Denny's Annual Allied Partners Summit Golf Tournament, activists pressured Denny's for an answer as to why the company failed to meet its previous pig welfare commitment that would ban caging pregnant mother pigs in gestation crates.
Denny's leadership, franchisees, and executives of the Supply Chain Committee refused to engage, even playing dumb when asked about their role in the matter.
This practice is so cruel it is already banned in 11 US states, several countries, and hundreds of companies have pledge to phase it out. Denny's refuses to make it a priority.
In 2012, the restaurant chain made a public commitment to end the use of gestation crates. After more than 10 years, the majority of female breeding pigs in Denny's supply chain are still confined to metal cages so small they can't even turn around. They spend nearly their entire lives this way.
Denny's recently removed its goal of ending this horrific practice and now refuses to engage animal protection groups and even customers who are concerned about the failed commitment. Hundreds of calls, emails, and social media comments have gone ignored.

Our ask to Denny's is simple:
Stop purchasing from farms
that cage pregnant pigs for life.
Even though the diner chain
promised to do exactly this in 2012,
they have abandoned that pledge,
betraying their customers, stakeholders
and the animals who are suffering
the worst cruelty inside cold steel cages.
"It kind of makes me not want to go there."
"Probably won't eat there anymore."
"I don't want to eat at Denny's anymore."
So who at Denny's
is avoiding the responsibility
of a supply chain
without extreme animal abuse?
We crashed their golf game
in Arlington, Texas to try to get answers.
Most of the executives
had nothing to say on the issue,
including Kevin Coveney,
chair of the Supply Chain Committee.
This is Jim Wainwright,
franchisee, vice chairman of the Denny's
Franchise Association board and a member
of the Supply Chain Committee.
He played dumb when we asked him about
the animal cruelty Denny's is allowing:
"Is Denny's going to make progress on this?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"
"How would I know that?"
"You're on the Supply Chain
Oversight Committee."
"I am?"
Medhat Bechay is a Denny's Franchise
Association board member and owns
or has ownership in 11 Denny's
locations in California and Hawaii.
VP of Product Innovation Sharon Lykins,
who helps write the Denny's menu,
also seemed clueless.
"No, and I have no comment."
Um, I have no idea what to do.
Another member of the Supply Chain
Committee is Glenn Beattie.
He owns about
40 Denny's locations.
"Do you know if there's going to be
any more progress?"
"Nothing. Don't know anything."
"I'm just here for golf."
And then there's Kelli Valade,
Denny's CEO.
She wouldn't even come outside
to join the golf tournament
with her colleagues
in order to avoid a conversation with us.
"No, I don't want you standing here"
"cause the CEO is not real comfortable."
The so-called "America's Diner"
does not reflect the desires of Americans,
as the majority of us are against extreme
animal cruelty.
We need your help to spare
countless animals from this misery.
Visit ItsDinerTime.com,
where you can directly contact
these Denny's executives
and express your frustration
with the company
for continuing to ignore animal abuse.
Together, we will hold companies
like Denny's accountable.
