I am Vanessa Wagner, a pianist.
Like me, you must have seen these terrible images from slaughterhouses, broadcast by the association L214.
Today I speak on their behalf to bring you a new investigation.
I was devestated by this abattoir : the terror of the animals—who we know
capable of thoughts and feelings—and their violent death.
As a mother, my heart was broken to see these calves,
suffocated to death in the bellies of their mothers just killed.
Revolted by the killing of these mother cows, an employee from the Limoges abattoir
contacted L214.
Along with other duties, he has to throw these nearly-born calves into a trashcan.
Several dozen every week.
At the Limoges abattoir, animals are constantly jabbed with electric shocks,
even directly into their eyes.
The cows, the calves, and the bulls all sense the danger. They panic and try to get away.
But it’s impossible for them to escape from the trap set for them.
The animals are stunned with a gun that penetrates their skull.
Mistakes are so frequent that criteria from the United Nations judges
this procedure as really serious and unacceptable.
The animals are supposed to be knocked unconscious...but this doesn’t always happen.
Once they are hung up...
or at the moment they are killed.
What we see is terrible.
And this is how animals behind slaughterhouse walls meet their deaths.
At Limoges, the farmers send their pregnant cows to slaughter.
Utterly spent, the mother cow won’t have a chance to live long enough
to give birth to her baby.
Inside the mother whose throat has been slit, the foetus dies slowly, asphyxiated .
Some are only a few weeks along,
others several months,
While others are about to be born.
Dozens of them a week are thrown into the trashcan.
These images are unbearable.
At yet it’s a daily occurence, at Limoges and elsewhere.
Thanks to the courage of this slaughterhouse worker, we can now face the fact
that meat and milk hide a violence of unspeakable suffering.
They cost the lives of millions of animals daily.
As Ghandi said, « The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged
by the way its animals are treated. »
It’s not too late : we can stop tolerating this by changing our own habits.
I decided long ago to stop eating animals.
As citizens, right now, we can ask for a ban to
he killing of pregnant cows.
