Animal Equality Explained: The Bird Flu

· 4 minutes · Youtube

Bird flu is surging, devastating millions of birds—and factory farming is fueling the crisis. Cramming animals into filthy, overcrowded spaces creates the perfect breeding ground for disease, putting both animals and humans at risk.

How does bird flu spread? What role does factory farming play? And what can we do to stop future pandemics? We’re answering your questions.

The bird flu is back, killing millions of birds
and putting public health at risk.
But knowledge can protect you from the virus.
This is everything you need to know
about the bird flu in just two minutes.
It starts here in factory farms,
where the avian flu
is tearing through millions of birds
and leaving devastation in its path.
The bird flu, also known as avian influenza,
is caused by the H5N1 virus.
The bird flu spreads quickly
through bodily fluids, droppings,
and direct contact.
With overcrowding
and unsanitary conditions,
factory farms provide the perfect
breeding ground for viruses like this.
Birds are packed into small spaces,
forced to stand on their own waste,
and often come into contact
with dead and dying animals.
The close proximity allows this virus
to spread quickly.
In these cramped conditions, an infected bird
can easily transmit the disease to an entire flock
in a matter of hours, causing the outbreak
to spread rapidly before it can be controlled.
Through our undercover investigations, we have
seen firsthand the suffering of these animals.
Take, for example, the fate of egg-laying hens.
Confined in overcrowded,
unsanitary conditions,
hens experience chronic stress
which weakens their immune system
and makes it easier for
infectious diseases to spread rapidly.
In factory farms, tens of thousands of
hens are trapped in bare wire cages,
deprived of even the simplest comfort.
The cages they are forced to live in
are only a few feet wide,
yet 4 to 10 hens are forced to live
their entire lives in there.
This is where they eat, drink,
urinate, defecate, sleep, and lay eggs,
never once able to spread their wings,
perch, or feel the warmth of the sun.
Meanwhile, male chicks deemed worthless by
the industry
are killed within hours of hatching
and discarded like trash.
This is the reality of the egg industry.
Across the world, we've witnessed
a system built for disease
and when outbreaks hit,
the industry's response is swift and cruel.
In response to bird flu outbreaks,
millions of birds are killed through methods
like gassing or suffocation
in an effort to contain the spread of the virus.
However, mass killings have proven ineffective.
In fact, killing infected
birds does nothing to address the root cause.
The factory farms that enable the virus to
spread so easily are the cause.
This approach fails to prevent future
outbreaks and risks of contagion.
Avian flu has proven to be highly contagious
and is spreading among species.
It infects not only birds, but also cows, pigs,
and even household pets.
New studies show that the virus has been found in
raw cat food, with the FDA warning that
contaminated food has led to the deaths of animals
we share our homes with.
Experts fear the virus could mutate,
spread faster, and become even deadlier.
The bird flu is affecting humans
more than we realize.
While rare, the virus can jump
from birds to people,
especially those in close contact
with infected animals like farmworkers.
As the virus spreads, there's concerns
it can mutate and become more easily
transmissible between humans,
creating a larger threat to public health.
The way we treat animals in factory farms
makes these outbreaks more likely,
putting us all at risk.
Industries are fighting to
keep the system intact.
Demand better for animals, your loved ones
and the future we all share.
The solution isn't mass killing
or waiting for the next outbreak.
It's staying informed and reducing your exposure
to animal-borne illness.
Choosing plant-based foods is not just a decision,
it's a commitment to compassion, health,
and the planet.
