Do you know how the eggs that
end up on Mexican tables are produced?
Animal Equality researchers have
infiltrated the
egg industry in Mexico again, and what they reveal is
shocking.
The confinement of animals in cages
is one of the cruelest practices in
industrial livestock farming. In the
egg industry, hens live their entire
lives assigned to cages alongside
six other hens. Stretching their wings, nesting, or
scratching is impossible; they will always step on the
wire of the cage and never on a
solid floor to rest their feet. The
suffering is immense. The enormous
amount of feces and urine produced by
tens of thousands of caged hens
in the same shed generates such high
concentrations of ammonia that it
causes them serious respiratory problems.
The appalling
hygienic and sanitary conditions of the farms are
common in the industry.
The hens bear the
brunt of this, suffering from all kinds
of diseases without ever receiving
individual veterinary care. The farms are often
infested with mites that invade the
hens' bodies and transmit
diseases, causing anemia if
the necessary measures are not taken.
Mites can lead to
outbreaks of salmonella, which
also infect eggs intended for human consumption.
One of the cruelest practices in the
industry is forced molting,
which consists of depriving hens of food
and water for three days to
accelerate a second
laying cycle. Many endure terrible
agony during or after this cruel
practice, being crushed
to death by other hens in the cages. There
is not a
moment of comfort or relief for any of them
when their egg production declines; their
fate is the same: the
slaughterhouse.
Contrary to what
misleading advertising shows us, hens are
complex, intelligent, and sensitive beings
who should not be treated as
egg-producing machines. It is
cruel that the egg industry subjects
millions of sensitive animals to this
immense suffering. At
Animal Equality, we are working
to make cages a thing of the past
by showing consumers the reality.
Although eliminating cages does not
mean the end of mistreatment, it undoubtedly
means a significant reduction in the
suffering of these animals.
We can do a lot to help
hens. Please replace eggs in
your diet; every action counts,
even the simplest. They are transforming the
living conditions of these sensitive
animals.
Sign the petition and let's end the
era of cages.
