You may want to think twice
before choosing what's for dinner tonight.
Every day, cows, pigs and chickens
endure extreme
suffering at the hands of factory farming.
Hidden behind the walls of these farms,
their pain is packaged and sold as meat,
dairy and eggs in your supermarket.
But what exactly goes on
behind the scenes of factory farms?
Factory farming refers to a method
of breeding and raising animals for food,
with the goal of maximizing production
and minimizing costs.
Factory farms were created
based on the idea
that the factory model of production
could be applied to animal farming.
This approach comes at the expense
of animals who are treated as commodities.
To house such a large number of animals,
these farms confine them to small spaces
such as cages or crates.
Can you imagine a life where you never
move from your seat on an airplane?
For example, this mother pig,
she is forced to live in a cage so small
she can't turn around.
She won't have a chance to express
natural behaviors or nurture her babies.
In factory farms,
animals often undergo mutilations,
such as castration for piglets,
dehorning for calves,
and beak trimming for hens,
all without anesthesia and often
without veterinary assistance.
To prevent the spread of infections
and diseases in factory farms,
animals are administered
a large amount of antibiotics to treat
and prevent illness caused
by the inhumane conditions they endure.
And yet, within these facilities,
the mortality rate of animals is very
high.
Globally, more than 20% of animals die on
farms before reaching the slaughterhouse.
Billions of animals
like those you see in this video
spend their lives inside a shed,
never able to feel the sunlight
or breathe fresh air, forced to live
and feed among their own waste.
These farms also contribute
to global environmental devastation.
