between
june and september 2020 animal
equalities investigators made
multiple visits to kinswood eggs in west
sussex
which can find hundreds of thousands of
hens each year for their eggs
tiny fragile chicks are packed into
cages here when they're just a few days
old
concerned with maximizing profit the
company raises
chicks itself to save on costs
locked away for life these birds will
spend the next 85 weeks trapped inside
bare metal cages
they will never feel the sun on their
backs or solid ground
beneath their feet
the next time they breathe fresh air
will be on the way to the slaughterhouse
chicks that become injured suffer
frightened
and alone some don't make it longer than
a few days of being here
as the babies grow their cages soon
become
even more crowded they are given less
space than an a4 piece of paper
her bird the cramped environment quickly
begins to take its toll
the hens are unable to carry out many of
their natural behaviors
they suffer from feather loss which in
some cases
is so severe that they become almost
completely bald
their eggs will be sold under the laid
in britain scheme
which assures consumers that it offers
the highest standards of food safety
and bird welfare providing eggs from
happy healthy hens
in reality many birds don't survive
these brutal conditions
[Music]
chickens aren't the only animals living
in these giant sheds
either toxic rodent poison is scattered
around the floor
and in old egg cartons bins are filled
with broken
shells maggots hen carcasses and even
the bloody corpse of a mouse
all swimming in the yolks from discarded
rotting eggs
the filthy overcrowded conditions are
not only horrifying
and unhygienic they are also incredibly
inhumane
hens deserve better than this please
leave eggs off your plate
