You animal
equality investigators in
Italy are exposing the shocking conditions chickens used
for meat are forced to endure.
And a farm in the north of Italy nearly 1
million chickens, every year are crammed into two filthy sheds.
These are the similar type of fast-growing chickens
as 99% of those used in
the United States.
have
these chickens are genetically selected by humans
to grow quickly to abnormally large sizes
many eventually cannot support
their own weight.
Many animals are slumped on the ground in a splay leg
position because of their joint and muscle problems. They
have difficulty moving and are unable to
walk to their water fountains and feeders many end
up dying from starvation or thirst.
Others cannot even get into their natural position for sleep
or rest, the genetic selection for such rapid
gain of weight causes these birds to suffer all
their lives.
In constant pain and with severe difficulties to walk chickens
remain in contact with the filthy soiled
litter underneath them their skin gets
irritated red and infected from the acids
and excrements.
The high concentration of ammonia makes the air almost
unbreathable and damages their lungs.
High temperatures and humidity in the summer combined with
the bacteria from decaying bodies puts these birds
at risk for infectious diseases.
Those who survive these conditions are typically killed at
just 42 days old, but for many their
lives are cut even shorter.
We find many dead chickens some at
an advanced stage of decomposition.
Our investigators
also inspect the Farm's cold rooms inside
plastic bags full of dead chickens
of different ages.
Chickens genetically selected to gain as
much weight as possible very quickly suffer even more.
They also die in large numbers, but still
the meat companies gain more money by
doing this.
