Dead on Arrival: Goats dragged, beaten, and slaughtered in India’s meat industry
Animal Equality recently went undercover in India’s goat meat industry. What we found was cruel and illegal. Footage captured during the investigation shows goats being dragged by their legs, hurled onto trucks, and slaughtered while still conscious.
The investigation covered seven farms, five markets, and four slaughterhouses across several states—Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. From transport to slaughter, investigators documented systemic abuse, neglect, and widespread violations of animal protection laws.
Animal Equality is calling on the Indian government to take immediate action.

While goats in India endure confinement, neglect, and slaughter, animals around the world face similar cruelty.
Choosing plant-based isn’t just a diet—it’s a powerful stance against factory farming. With each meal, you're helping build a more compassionate future.

For a year, Animal Equality
investigators went undercover to
expose the slaughter of goats.
What we found was
not only cruel—it was illegal.
Goats were dragged, chained,
and nearly decapitated
while conscious.
We investigated facilities
in four states in India
and found legal violations
in each one.
On the farms,
goats are kept in filthy,
overcrowded conditions.
Some are confined to small
cages,
others tied with ropes so short
they can barely move.
Many goats suffer from painful,
untreated injuries—
left without veterinary care.
At the markets,
they have no access to food,
water, or shelter for hours...
sometimes days.
Workers
handle the animals roughly
and without care.
Some goats are stuffed
into sacks
and transported on motorcycles.
Others are crammed into trucks
so tightly their limbs protrude
from the vehicles.
Indian transport laws
set space requirements
for animals during transport.
What we found
directly violates these laws.
The
transport conditions are harsh.
Several goats die
before making it to slaughter.
At the slaughterhouse,
goats are often killed
without prior stunning.
They are left fully conscious
as their throats are cut.
Once slaughtered,
their bodies are pumped with air
as part of the skin
removal process.
Indian law requires
slaughterhouses to be licensed.
But our investigation found
goats killed in open markets
and roadside meat shops.
This is a violation of India's
animal protection laws.
While we call
on the Indian government to act,
you can help end this cruelty.
Together,
we can make sure this industry
doesn't go
unseen and unregulated.
Share the investigation.
And, please, choose compassion.
Keep animal products off your plate.
