Cage-free by 2025? This hospitality titan is falling short.

Los Angeles, CA—Marriott International, one of the world’s largest hospitality companies, is under fire for seemingly falling behind on its animal welfare commitments. Animal Equality, a leading global animal protection organization, has joined mounting global pressure demanding accountability from Marriott for backtracking on its pledge to source 100% cage-free eggs globally by the end of 2025.

In 2018, Marriott joined a growing list of corporations committed to ending the use of cages for hens in its global egg supply chains. While the company has not officially rescinded the policy, it has also not reported any metrics showing that it is on track—raising serious concerns about its intent to follow through.

“Consumers and animal advocates took Marriott at its word when it promised to go cage-free globally,” said Sharon Núñez, President of Animal Equality. “But with 2025 already halfway over and no meaningful update, we’re calling on Marriott to be transparent and uphold its commitment to end one of the cruelest practices in animal agriculture.”

Battery cages confine egg-laying hens in spaces so small they cannot spread their wings or engage in natural behaviors. Eliminating these cages is a baseline standard in animal welfare, and many companies worldwide have already transitioned or are actively working to do so. Several countries, including the European Union, and ten U.S. states have also restricted or banned cages due to concerns over their effects on animal well-being.

While Marriott International’s latest public reports reference spending on cage-free eggs, they do not include critical details such as what percentage of its global egg supply is cage-free—a key indicator of real progress.

This campaign is about holding one of the world’s largest hospitality companies to its word. Animal suffering is not a matter of convenience. Marriott must lead with integrity and fulfill its promise for the sake of animals and consumer trust.

Sharon Núñez, President of Animal Equality

Animal Equality is demanding that Marriott leadership uphold their promise to eliminate 100% of cages for hens globally by the end of the year and provide transparent progress updates on their transition.
