Gathered Foods, owner of vegan seafood brand Good Catch Foods, has recently opened a huge fish-free seafood production facility in Heath, Ohio, which aims to make $100 million in plant-based protein a year!

MASSIVE VEGAN SEAFOOD FACILITY: Despite the obstacles due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 42,500-square-foot plant opened in late August after raising millions of dollars from investors, including celebrities Paris Hilton, Lance Bass, and Woody Harrelson. The plant started out with 52 employees, and Gathered Foods plans to create more jobs in the community before the end of the year.

PLANT-BASED TUNA IS MAKING A SPLASH: Last year, Good Catch Foods launched fish-free tuna in pouches at retailers in the United States and the United Kingdom. The realistic “tuna,” which comes in three different varieties, created a wave of excitement for vegans and omnivores alike. Good catch has even partnered with well-known seafood company Bumblee Foods in efforts to make plant-based seafood options more widely available to reduce strain on our oceans. According to Forbes, plant-based seafood is the latest food trend because of consumers’ desire to help the environment and also likely due to the products’ longer shelf-life.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH SEAFOOD?: Fish and other sea animals are self-aware and they can feel pain and suffer in the same capacity as other animals. Despite this, there are no laws regulating how they’re raised, caught, or killed in the United States. They suffer prolonged and excruciating deaths when they’re yanked from the water and begin to suffocate, are bludgeoned, or suffer the effects of decompression sickness. Fish raised on fish farms are forced to live in cramped environments and experience psychological distress, and oftentimes disease or parasites, for their whole lives.

DESTROYING THE ENVIRONMENT: Fish populations are dwindling and the lack of biodiversity caused by overfishing, along with the water contamination caused by aquafarms, could have disastrous results to human life. Experts predict fishless oceans by the year 2048. This is important because the ocean plays a big part in regulating temperature and it also creates fifty percent of our oxygen on Earth.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: If you care about the environment and animals, the best thing you can do is to stop eating fish and other animal-derived foods, and choose plant-based options instead. Along with Good Catch Foods, you can get plant-based seafood from brands like Quorn, Gardein, Loma Linda, May Wah Market, and more!
