The largest retailer in Brazil commits to cage-free eggs

Carrefour – the biggest retailer in Brazil – committed today to transitioning all of its own brand eggs to cage-free by 2025 and all other brands sold in its supermarkets by 2028.The commitment comes after nearly two years of extensive negotiations with Animal Equality, HSI, Fórum Animal and Mercy For Animals.Valor Economico, one of the most important media outlets in Brazil, released the news, crediting acceleration of the process to NGOs. Carrefour also shared its own press release andothers are sharing the news as well. “This sets a new standard for animal welfare in Brazil and is a huge step for improving the conditions for millions of hens used for eggs,” said Vivian Mocellin, Executive Director of Animal Equality in Brazil.
