As of October 23, 2017, fifteen schools around Brooklyn, New York City, have made the compassionate choice to cut back on meat, and are now taking part in “Meatless Monday”. This means that the schools will be serving all vegetarian breakfast and lunch in their cafeterias every Monday.

The Mayor, Bill de Blasio, will also be taking part in the great initiative himself. He states that “Meatless Monday” can help the city and the students become healthier, while also improving the health of our environment. He also believes that the initiative will help the schools contribute to a more sustainable way of living. First Lady Chirlane McCray says that Meatless Monday will help expose the children to a new variety of healthy and nutritious foods. Amie Hamlin, Executive Director of the Coalition for Healthy School Food, states that they strive to implement the fully vegetarian menu to as many schools in New York as possible. This will allow them to provide education about the benefits of a plant-based diet. Furthermore, the vegetarian menu is also a tool for the schools to combat obesity, heart disease, and cancer that can be a result of the standard American diet, says Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett. Meatless Monday is a positive tool to encourage the students to live healthier and more sustainable lives, both now and in the future.
