It was stated that the slaughter, sale, consumption, and possession of beef has been banned. Not only has the Indian state banned beef, but also brought in a five-year jail term for possession. In India, cows are considered sacred in the Hindu religion, but the beef industry is typically run by Muslims. According to President Mukherjee, “Our dream of a ban on cow slaughter becomes a reality now.” Maharashtra is one of the wealthiest and most developed states in India. Maharashtra’s chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, tweeted his thanks to the president, saying “our dream of ban on cow slaughter becomes a reality now”. Here at Animal Equality, we believe this is a promising step forward in the protection of cows which we hope causes a global movement towards empathy and an ethical treatment of, not only cows but all species, as more and more citizens decide to become compassionate and empathetic.
