Animal Equality’s Lamb Investigation Reaches Parliament

Italian politician referenced Animal Equality's lamb slaughterhouse investigation and suggested a vegetarian diet to prevent the suffering of these animals.

On Friday 18th of April, Italian politician Paolo Bernini, from the Five Star Movement (M5S), made reference to Animal Equality’s lamb slaughterhouse investigation during his speech at the Italian Parliament. The politician spoke about the strong impact the images had had on him, as well as the intense suffering lambs have to endure throughout this time of year due to the celebration of Easter. He finalized his speech by suggesting a vegetarian diet as a way to prevent the suffering of these animals.

On Monday April 14th, Animal Equality released the footage of their new investigation inside the farms and slaughterhouses of the Italian lamb industry. The Animal Equality investigation team documented two lamb farms in Lazio and two slaughterhouses in Lombardia, Brescia. These shocking images show lambs being slaughtered without prior stunning in deplorable conditions. The video also shows the moment in which the lambs are weighed to be taken to the slaughterhouse, where they suffer terribly due to the stress and abruptness of this process, to the point where they even break and fracture some of their limbs.

Quoting Sharon Nunez, International Director of Animal Equality, “our investigation is again causing a great impact on Italian society. Paolo Bernini’s speech is a clear example of this. We are pleased to see that the debate enters the political sphere.” This investigation forms part of the “Save A Lamb” campaign Animal Equality launched last year, which had a strong impact on Italian society, managing to reduce lamb consumption by 40% over Easter. This represented a decrease of approximately 320,000 lambs.
