WHAT IS A CHARITABLE TRUST?
A powerful way you can help animals is to establish an irrevocable charitable lead trust with appreciating assets, which will provide periodic payments to Animal Equality. In addition to providing invaluable support for Animal Equality’s programs, these payments will serve to reduce the estate tax burden on the grantor’s estate.
Another is to establish and fund an irrevocable charitable remainder trust, naming Animal Equality as the beneficiary of the remaining principal when the Trust terminates. This allows the grantor to avoid capital gains tax on the Trust property and to receive income tax savings on the fair market value of Animal Equality’s remainder interest.
In addition, the Trust property will not be included in your estate, providing additional savings on estate taxes. We always recommend that you consult with your lawyer or financial advisor for additional information on using Trust assets in your planned giving portfolio.
