In the United States, ninety-nine percent of all animals raised for food live on factory farms. Having inspected hundreds of factory farms and dozens of slaughterhouses worldwide, Animal Equality has repeatedly revealed that animal abuse and neglect are common within this industry.
Banning factory farming in the United States aligns with Americans’ values, beliefs, and interests and contributes to building a world where all animals are protected and respected.
One of the most controversial practices in the animal agriculture industry is the force-feeding of ducks and geese to produce foie gras – a ‘delicacy’ served at some upscale dining establishments. “Foie gras” is French for “fatty liver” – and that’s exactly what it is: a fatty spread made from the diseased livers of violently force-fed ducks and geese.
The practice of force-feeding to induce fatty liver disease is widely considered unacceptable, even among meat-eaters, yet it is perfectly legal in 49 out of 50 U.S. states. It’s time to end this practice by banning the production and sale of force-fed foie gras across the country.
One of the most upsetting practices in animal farming is the killing of baby chicks within the egg industry. Since male chicks cannot lay eggs and are not the same breed of chicken used for meat, these baby animals are deemed worthless and are killed using extremely cruel techniques, such as gassing, suffocation, and electrocution. One of the most common methods used is maceration, in which the animals are transferred to a machine called a grinder and are killed by “shredding.” The birds are alive and fully conscious as their bodies are ground up. Animal Equality has started a campaign in the U.S., as well as in other countries, to stop the practice, known as chick culling.
Every year, the United States sends tens of thousands of horses to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered for their meat. These animals are transported hundreds of miles–crammed into a truck where they travel for more than 24 hours without food or water. At the slaughterhouse, they are often killed while conscious, as documented by Animal Equality investigations in Italy, Spain and Mexico.
There is currently no permanent ban on the exportation or slaughter of American horses. It’s time the US Government puts an end to their killing for human consumption.
The reality for cows and buffalos on dairy farms is hidden behind labels of happy cows in open fields. But the image the industry creates is far from the truth. Animal Equality is uncovering dairy’s dark secrets and showing the systematic abuse inside the global industry. Investigation footage shows how cows are forcibly impregnated but have their calves taken from them moments after birth just so the females will produce milk. Once they can no longer produce milk, these cows are slaughtered for their meat.

Since the presentation of a powerful investigation inside duck farms in Germany in December 2014, Animal Equality has been working to improve the welfare of these animals in the country.
Fueled by a new investigation into China’s dog and cat meat and skin trade filmed in the country’s wet markets in May 2020, Animal Equality has exposed that the sale and slaughter of dogs and cats for consumption and retail continues, despite media reports and statements from China’s government proclaiming otherwise. Animal Equality releases first US investigation showing shocking cruelty at a calf ranch that supplies Bel Brands, producer of Babybel.
Animal Equality, in collaboration with the prestigious Spanish TV program Salvados, investigated “Hermanos Carrasco,” a pig farm located in the Spanish region of Murcia. The farm was a supplier of the international meat company El Pozo. Our investigators revealed animals in shockingly cruel conditions as well as blatant violations of the animal welfare law.
Our international campaign is demanding El Pozo to implement significant animal protection policies.
Animal Equality has been investigating and exposing the cruelty inherent to the lamb industry in Italy since 2013. Five years of investigations and campaigns, as well as media exposure, have resulted in Italians significantly reducing their consumption of lamb meat.

This campaign aimed at reducing the consumption of dairy products in Mexico launched in 2017 Animal Equality with a shocking never-seen-before investigation inside the Mexican dairy industry. The images featured in some of the most important media outlets in the country got over 80,000 people to sign our petition asking the Federal Mexican Government to legislate against cruelty to farmed animals. Our educational materials tailored to the Mexican context have inspired Mexicans to eliminate dairy from their diets.
Through a series of investigations inside the British dairy industry, Animal Equality’s campaign to expose the cruelty of dairy farms in the United Kingdom is inspiring people to discover healthy dairy-free eating.
In 2016 Animal Equality started a national campaign in Mexico to end the confinement of hens in cages in the country. A groundbreaking investigation launched in October that year showed how much suffering these delicate animals endure. Our work so far has resulted in six Mexican companies banning cages for hens from their supply chain.
Animal Equality launched its campaign to end cages for hens in Italy on February 2017, with an investigation inside the hen industry in Italy that showed systemic cruelty and neglect. Since the launch of this investigation, Animal Equality’s campaign to end cages for hens in Italy has convinced 22 companies, including food giants such as Carrefour or Lidl, to ban cages for hens.
In November 2017, Animal Equality presented a never-seen-before investigation inside the Indian dairy industry. Our investigation covered small, medium and large dairies across the different states of the entire country. In total, we visited 107 dairy farms and eight slaughterhouses. As part of the campaign, Animal Equality is encouraging Indians to eliminate dairy from their diets through its educational efforts.
Over the last five years, Animal Equality has carried out and presented the most comprehensive investigations inside rabbit farming in Europe; Investigating 70 rabbit farms in Spain and several rabbit farms in Italy. Our investigators have also visited rabbit slaughterhouses in both countries showing appalling instances of abuse in all the facilities visited. In March 2017, in a historical voting, the European Parliament paved the way to improving rabbit welfare in Europe. Shortly afterward the European Commission, in charge of creating a report on the state of the sector, concluded that “the sector appeared to be broadly in compliance with welfare legislation requirements.” Animal Equality campaign continues until rabbit cages are banned in Europe.
Animal Equality has presented several investigations inside chicken farms in Germany including an investigation inside two of Germany’s largest chicken meat producers.
Through our educational work; encouraging consumers to reduce their consumption of animal products, legislation initiatives; pressing charges against farms that do not comply with current animal welfare laws, as well as our corporate work; working with companies to improve chicken welfare, in Germany, we are committed to improving the welfare of some of the most abused animals on the planet.
After an unprecedented investigation inside Mexican slaughterhouses, which gained a considerable amount of media attention in the country, Animal Equality worked strenuously to introduce a historical initiative in the Mexican Senate that, if passed, will make animal abuse in farms and slaughterhouses a crime, punishable with up to three years in prison. A similar initiative was passed in the Mexican state of Jalisco due to Animal Equality’s advocacy.
Animal Equality has been one of the most prolific organizations doing investigations inside the foie-gras industry with investigations in France and Spain. In 2017 Animal Equality launched a campaign to ban the importation of foie gras in the United Kingdom, a country that has already banned the production of foie gras. Since the launch of the campaign, we have gained 80,000 signatures calling the British Parliament to draft legislation to prohibit the importation of foie gras, gained celebrity support as well as significant media attention on the issue thanks to our eye-grabbing actions, and held presentations at the British Parliament gaining the support of several Members of Parliament for our campaign.
Since 2012 Animal Equality has presented several groundbreaking investigations in the United Kingdom, that have achieved an outstanding amount of media coverage including the BBC, The Guardian, Sky News and other influential media.
These powerful investigations have resulted in some of the longest prison sentences in the history of the UK for farmed animal cruelty, as well as several supermarkets immediately eliminating any products from the farms investigated. Animal Equality is also working with companies to ensure their adherence to stricter animal welfare standards that protect pigs from cruelty.
Animal Equality’s Voiceless Friends campaign goal is to end the cat and dog meat trade. Since the launch of this campaign in 2013, Animal Equality has collected over 600,000 signatures urging the Chinese government to eradicate this cruel trade.
We have also presented four shocking investigations inside cat and dog meat markets and slaughterhouses and worked with authorities and Chinese activists managing to close 33 vendors that sold cat and dog meat and slaughterhouses.
One of Animal Equality’s strategic priorities is ending cages for hens throughout the world. This cruel and outdated system causes extreme suffering to birds. Over the last two years, Animal Equality has educated millions of people of the horrific suffering of these animals as well as successfully convinced over 75 companies to eliminate cages from their supply chain in five countries. In India, we have been working with the Law Commission and recommended the banning of cages for hens in the country.
