Investigations
107 Dairy Farms, 11 Animal Markets and 8 Slaughterhouses Investigated in India
Animal Equality investigators in India inspected a total of 107 dairy farms, 11 live animal markets and 8 slaughterhouses across the country to expose the practices of the dairy industry. The investigation covered facilities in all regions of the country: Punjab and Haryana in the north, Uttar Pradesh in the east; Gujarat and Maharastra in the west; Secunderabad in the center; Hyderabad, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala in the south. The investigators witnessed male buffalo calves tightly tethered and left to die shortly after birth, female buffaloes injected with Oxytocin to increase their milk production while on the farms, and animals bludgeoned with a hammer in the slaughterhouses.
Gadhimai Ritual Sacrifice
Animal Equality used a drone to capture footage of the Gadhimai Animal Sacrifice in India, which takes place during the Gadhimai festival every five years. We witnessed fields strewn with thousands of dead animals. The footage, which also showed how animals were killed in full view of each other and human children, helped reduce the number of animals killed by 69 percent at the following festival.
Bullock Cart Races
Animal Equality worked in India, alongside local activists and organizatioms, to ban cruel bullock cart races. Our investigators witnessed bulls being beaten, whipped, electrocuted, force-fed alcohol, prodded with nails and spiked instruments. Following our investigation and thanks to the work of multiple organizations, the Supreme Court of India implemented a ban on these cruel races.
