Milked Dry: Animal Equality Exposes India’s Illegal Dairy Slaughterhouses
Animal Equality’s recent investigation reveals widespread cruelty and legal violations in India’s dairy slaughterhouses. The findings demonstrate systemic animal abuse across the country and in the dairy industry as a whole.
From October to December 2023, investigators documented six facilities in Maharashtra and Kerala. The findings highlight the deep connection between India’s dairy and meat industries.

For three months, Animal Equality
went undercover to
investigate the slaughter of cows
and buffaloes used for milk.
Our team filmed inside
six slaughterhouses
and found blatant, illegal behavior
in each one.
Now, we're demanding justice
for the animals
who suffer inside.
This investigation takes place
in the Indian states of Maharashtra
and Kerala, but the findings
demonstrate a broader reality.
One where cows
and buffaloes are abused
and slaughtered
by the global dairy industry.
Right before slaughter, butchers
milk the animals one last time.
Then, they are killed
in full view of other animals.
This is a violation of Indian law,
which requires a separate space
for stunning
before slaughter.
Buffaloes are brought
into the slaughter area
and forced to the ground.
Their throats are slit
multiple times by the workers.
Their death
is slow as they bleed out.
Scared animals
attempt to flee,
but they are restrained.
Some who summon the strength
try to stand up and flee,
but resistance is impossible.
At this slaughterhouse in Deonar,
a worker pulls
a buffalo's tethered legs.
She slips
in the blood of the animal killed
just minutes before her.
Workers
pull and twist her tail, then
cut her throat as she struggles.
In some slaughterhouses,
animals are repeatedly
bludgeoned with a hammer
in an attempt to stun them.
This cow stands disoriented as the
first blow strikes her forehead.
She cries out
as the hammer hits her until
she finally falls to the floor.
The workers have covered
the eyes of these cows,
but they can hear
the sounds from other animals
being killed in the adjacent rooms.
As the covering falls
from the eyes of this buffalo,
we can see how scared he is,
but he has no way to escape.
The ropes around his neck and head
hold him in place
until he finally falls.
Everything you've
seen from this investigation
directly violates
India's Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals Act.
It also violates High Court
and Supreme Court orders
that mandate
how slaughterhouses should operate.
Still,
our investigation found these laws
disregarded in every facility
we visited.
Dairy and meat are one industry.
Farmers sell millions of cows
and buffaloes for meat
when they can no longer produce
milk.
This is how consuming dairy fuels
this cycle of suffering,
even if you don't eat meat.
