ANIMAL CRUELTY: APPROVED BY RON SARGENT
Ron Sargent serves as Chair of Kroger’s Board of Directors while millions of hens continue to suffer in cages under the company’s watch.
In 2016, Kroger publicly promised customers and the public that it would stop selling eggs from hens that spend their entire lives in cages. Years later, millions of hens are still confined to battery cages so small they cannot even spread their wings.
Sargent built his corporate reputation around “doing the right thing” and promoting environmental and social responsibility during his years leading Staples. Today, he chairs a Kroger board that has failed to keep one of its most visible animal welfare promises.
Sargent also served on Wells Fargo’s board during the fallout from the bank’s fake accounts scandal, which exposed widespread governance and oversight failures. Now, another company under his leadership is facing growing public scrutiny.
As Chair of Kroger’s Board—and Kroger’s interim CEO during the period the company confirmed it would not fulfill its cage-free commitment—Ron Sargent was in a position to act. Instead, millions of hens remain in cages.
The public is asking: if corporate responsibility matters, why hasn’t Kroger done the right thing?

RON SARGENT MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE
Ron Sargent has spent years presenting himself as a leader in corporate responsibility and ethics. But under his leadership at Kroger, millions of hens are still trapped in cages.
Kroger once promised to stop selling eggs from caged hens. Instead, the company weakened and delayed that commitment while continuing to profit from animal suffering.
Sargent currently chairs Kroger’s board and previously served as interim CEO while the company backed away from its pledge. He also served on the Wells Fargo board during years of ongoing fallout from the bank’s fake accounts scandal, where regulators and shareholders raised concerns about oversight failures at the highest levels.
Leadership means accountability. If Ron Sargent believes in “doing the right thing,” then Kroger should finally fulfill its cage-free commitment.
Tell Ron Sargent to act now.
