Marriott International’s Unfulfilled Cage-Free COMMITMENT
Five years ago, Tony Capuano became CEO of Marriott International. Since then, hens in Marriott’s global egg supply chain remain trapped in cages — despite the company’s public promise to go cage-free by 2025.
Marriott committed to ending this extreme confinement in 2018, which forces hens into barren wire enclosures so small they can’t spread their wings. Many suffer injuries, stress, and feather loss — some of the worst abuses in industrial animal agriculture.
Marriott knew the cruelty and promised to change. Yet under Tony Capuano’s leadership, that promise has not been fulfilled. When a company breaks a commitment of this scale, responsibility starts at the top.

Tony Capuano’s Leadership and Corporate Responsibility
Tony Capuano is one of the highest-paid executives in the hospitality industry, receiving more than $20 million in 2024. He travels by Marriott’s private jet, which cost the company over $600,000 in 2024 alone.
But under his leadership, Marriott still won’t spare pennies to stop the cruel treatment of hens.
This is a company with immense resources and global influence.
Marriott can afford to end cages; the real question is whether CEO Tony Capuano will make it a priority.
What Marriott employees are saying
Some employees have publicly expressed concern about company direction, layoffs, and leadership priorities in recent years.

[Marriott’s senior leadership] will focus on pleasing Wall Street and forget about their guests and it will not end well.

I’ve seen people with 20+ years kicked to the curb and all their institutional knowledge going right out the door with them… We thought our loyalty would be important. I guess not. I desperately miss Arne Sorensen. This company died with him.

We hear more layoffs expected in 2025 as they relook at the business. Shameful to come from a CEO that just tripled his salary.
