You can end the slaughter of horses

The SAFE Act for horses could end the export and slaughter of horses from the U.S. But Congress needs to know you support this legislation.

Please use the form provided to send a message to your members of Congress, urging them to support the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act.

If your legislator is already a supporter, we will generate a “Thank You” message on your behalf.

Why the Save America’s Forgotten Equines Act is important

Every year, thousands of U.S. horses are transported to Canada and Mexico and then slaughtered for human consumption. Although the United States has effectively banned horse slaughter within its borders, approximately 20,000 horses are exported every year.

Many consider these sensitive and intelligent animals their companions, but they are treated as commodities in this global trade. They suffer not only in slaughterhouses but also during long-distance transport between countries.

Animal Equality and fellow animal protection organizations support the SAFE Act and urge its inclusion in the Farm Bill. The Farm Bill is a piece of legislation that comes around once every five years. It allows Congress to improve our food system and the lives of animals. If passed, the SAFE Act would ban the exportation of horses from the U.S. to other countries for slaughter.

Meet Dane Charbeneau, Animal Equality’s Campaigns Manager, and Gail Bumsted, a passionate animal protector. In December 2022, Gail joined us at the US Capitol, standing with other activists to protest against horse slaughter. Together, we’re fighting to end this cruel practice once and for all.
