Ahold Delhaize cruelty exposed

At a Kansas pig farm connected to major grocery chains, Animal Equality investigators found pregnant pigs suffering in cages barely larger than their bodies. Many were covered in sores from rubbing against the bars. Others exhibited extreme stress from a life of confinement. 

In the U.S., mother pigs are locked in these crates for their entire pregnancies. After giving birth, they’re impregnated again—and the cycle repeats.

Experts have described gestation crates as “one of the cruelest forms of confinement devised by humankind.”

From 2024 to 2025, an Animal Equality investigator went undercover at a pig breeding facility in Kansas. This farm is linked to Ahold Delhaize–parent company of Stop & Shop, Giant, and Food Lion. 

Here’s what the meat industry—and the grocery stores profiting from it—hide from you.

Undercover on a U.S. pig farm

Across the U.S., around 3.5 million mother pigs are locked in gestation crates–metal cages so small they can’t turn around for their entire pregnancies. These crates are so controversial that they’ve been banned in several U.S. states and countries. 

This is life for mother pigs in the meat industry, captured by an undercover investigator: 

Gestation crates crush pregnant pigs’ growing bodies. Many suffer from bloody sores as metal bars dig into their skin.
Pigs engage in repetitive, stress-induced behaviors. Many chew the air and bite the metal bars. Others climb upward to escape.
A pig wedges her head beneath the crate. She screams—trapped—until a worker finally intervenes.
Mother pigs give birth to premature piglets in their cages. These piglets rot on the floors behind their caged mothers, who can’t turn around to see them.
A pig nudges her dead companion, searching for signs of life. Death is common due to harsh pig farm conditions.
An injured pig is shot and left to bleed out in a holding pen—while nearby pigs watch, unable to turn away.

HOLD GROCERY CHAINS ACCOUNTABLE

Ahold Delhaize is breaking its promises–and animals are paying the price. 

Between 2013 and 2014, Stop & Shop, Giant, and Food Lion pledged to remove cages for pregnant pigs in their U.S. supply chains. Ahold Delhaize—their parent company—reaffirmed these commitments in 2020. Over ten years later, that promise is unfulfilled.
