Stop Connecticut’s rabbit slaughter bill
Connecticut residents, your legislators want to legalize the slaughter of rabbits in your state under the guise of promoting local agriculture.
These animals are considered companions to many Americans—typically the third most common pet in American homes, after cats and dogs. But HB 5134 would strip these gentle animals of even the most basic protections, leaving them vulnerable to unregulated, industrial-scale meat production.
Urge your lawmakers to vote ‘no’ on HB 5134.

Connecticut bill threatens RABBITS
Connecticut is looking to legalize the raising and slaughter of rabbits for meat in the state. Promoters of the bill claim it is to improve local agriculture, but it would sentence thousands of rabbits to lives on cruel factory farms.
Unlike traditional livestock, rabbits lack specific federal protections under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, meaning this bill would expose them to brutal conditions with virtually no oversight.
Approving HB 5134 would set a troubling precedent, paving the way for the large-scale production of rabbits for meat while ignoring their status as beloved companions and the ethical concerns of countless Americans. This is more than an issue of animal protection—it is a reflection of our values and the kind of society we strive to create.
This bill is moving quickly toward a final vote, and Connecticut advocates are urging legislators to reject it. If you live in Connecticut—or know someone who does—take action now. Write to your legislators and protect rabbits today.

What happens inside a rabbit farm?
Animal Equality’s team has completed numerous investigations into rabbit farms worldwide. From Mexico to Italy to Spain, our investigators have found abuse inside each rabbit farm exposed. This cruelty has no place in Connecticut or anywhere else in the world.

Confined
Rabbits are confined to cages that allow little movement. They are unable to stretch, hop or dig as rabbits naturally do. The cages provide no comfort or activities to relieve boredom or stress. Rabbits often bite at the bar of their cages or resort to self-mutilation to relieve their discomfort.

Overcrowded
Farms typically house numerous rabbits inside one cage. These conditions cause severe stress, which leads to fighting among animals. Weaker animals are often bullied. It’s not uncommon for animals to suffer from untreated scratches and bites.

Scared
Typically timid animals, rabbits suffer from extreme fear inside factory farms. During an investigation into a rabbit slaughterhouse in Mexico, Animal Equality investigators captured the sound of rabbits screaming while watching other animals being killed.

Abused
Workers roughly handle these gentle and sensitive animals. Rabbits are often pulled by the ears or picked up by their hind legs when being handled. They are also tossed carelessly into transport carts when being moved to the slaughterhouse.
