FEBRUARY 2019 ACHIEVEMENTS REPORT

I’m so proud of all that Animal Equality accomplished in such little time, working on the front lines to create a world where all animals are protected and respected.

As you read this report of what we accomplished this past month, please know that this vital work can only happen because of your continued support. Thank you! We and the animals are forever grateful for your generosity and for taking a stand against animal abuse.

Thank You,

Exposing Cruelty Through Investigations

The Real Face of the Milk Industry

Animal Equality Italia released an investigation revealing the horrifying reality behind the milk industry, using footage captured from dairy farms in the Lombardy region of Italy. Our investigators exposed these horrifying cruelties:

  • Calves and cows living in cramped, unsanitary conditions, covered in feces and mud
  • Cows with mastitis and very serious wounds, including hooves illegally covered with scotch tape
  • Calves taken from their mothers hours after birth

Our campaign makes various requests to the Italian government, including installing CCTV cameras in slaughterhouses, enforcing stunning laws without exemptions and exceptions, and making animal abuse in slaughterhouse a criminal offense.

The investigation received a media reach of over 80 million and was covered by top news outlets, including Fanpage, TPI, Business Insider, and Radio Popolare.

Update: Fir Tree Investigation

Three farm workers were convicted of animal abuse at Grimsby Magistrates Court in the United Kingdom as a result of Animal Equality’s undercover investigation at Fir Tree Farm in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom, last year. The supervisor and animal welfare manager at the farm, was filmed violently kicking pigs at least 20 times in just a few days, along with two other workers. Each was given an eight week suspended prison sentence and a community order of 100 hours of unpaid work.

During the sentencing, District Judge Daniel Curtis expressed his disgust with the crimes, remarking “The footage is sickening to watch. I don’t draw any distinction between acts of violence against human beings and animals”…“In some ways, it is worse that they are against animals as they are defenseless.”

News of the conviction gained considerable media coverage with pieces in BBC, ITV, and Grimsby Telegraph, as well as stories on local BBC and ITV television channels.

Corporate Progress

Corporate Commitments

After negotiations with Animal Equality and other organizations, Cristallo, an upscale bakery chain with five locations in São Paulo, Brazil, has committed to going 100% cage-free by 2025.

Campaign Updates

Following an Open Wing Alliance (OWA) campaign, IKEA has committed to improving conditions for chickens in its meat supply chain throughout Europe. This policy will reduce the suffering of millions of chickens every year. OWA has also been campaigning to call on Starbucks to implement a global policy banning cages in its egg supply chain.

In the U.S., the McDonald’s campaign coalition launched a counter leading up to the company’s upcoming May shareholder meeting. Over the next 100 days, we’ll be engaging in especially creative actions to inform consumers about the cruelty chickens experience in McDonald’s meat supply chain.

Other current campaigns include Pastelería Marisa (bakery) and La Parroquia de Veracruz (coffee shop chain) in Mexico; Sodiê (cake and snack company) and GPA (the largest retailer in the country) in Brazil; and DIA (discount retailer) in Spain. In total, Animal Equality’s corporate campaigns had a media reach of nearly 17 million, including coverage by Leggo, GreenStyle, and Glasgow Live.

Legal Advocacy

Jalisco Without Cruelty

Animal Equality in Mexico launched Jalisco Without Cruelty, a new campaign to change animal protection laws in Jalisco, Mexico, asking lawmakers to pass legislation that would make cruelty against farmed animals in the state a crime. The initiative, which would protect more than 200 million farmed animals each year, was proposed to the Jalisco Congress on behalf of Animal Equality by Deputy Salvador Caro Cabrera. Deputy Caro also presented Animal Equality footage showing cruelty on farms in Jalisco and asked the legislative body to approve the initiative.

We are currently lobbying to make this initiative a reality and have asked individuals to sign our petition for Jalisco Without Cruelty, collecting nearly 10,000 signatures in a two-week span. The campaign has been covered by top news outlets Economiahoy, Publimetro México, PR Newswire, and Notimex.

Lawsuit Against Pilgrim's Pride

Animal Equality and Richman Law Group are representing the nonprofits Food & Water Watch and Organic Consumers Association (OCA) in a lawsuit against Pilgrim’s Pride Corp. for the deceptive marketing and advertising of Pilgrim’s Pride chicken products. The suit was brought in D.C. Superior Court, under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act.

This action has resulted in major media coverage with a potential reach of more than 60 million, including an exclusive with Bloomberg ahead of our joint press release.

End The Cage Age

Animal Equality Italia premiered an exclusive short movie, M6NTHS, about the life of a piglet from birth to death in support of the End The Cage Age campaign. The European Citizen Initiative, which aims to abolish all cages in the European Union, fueled by the campaign, has reached over 500,000 signatures and is now well on its way to the target goal of one million signatures by the end of September.

Javier Moreno, Animal Equality’s Executive Director in Spain, presented the End the Cage initiative to the Congress of Deputies of Spain, alongside other Spanish organizations in the coalition, speaking about the work we do for caged hens in Spain.

The campaign has received a great deal of media attention, resulting in a total reach of over 180 million, including in El Pais, ANSA, Fanpage, TPI, La Stampa, and Il Sole 24 Ore.

Ban Foie Gras in NYC

Our New York City campaign to ban foie gras sales is off to a strong start in its initial stages. We now have almost 50 groups making up the coalition and have received some great press on the campaign.

Raising Awareness

Exposing Factory Farms

Two Animal Equality investigations were featured in a half-hour live news program on TG2, one of the most watched Italian television channels. The program followed the well-known journalist Piergiorgio Giacovazzo into an intensive pig farm and egg-laying hen facility.

iAnimal

We began our 10th iAnimal Outreach Tour throughout Texas. Thus far we’ve visited four college and university campuses in the Dallas area, including the University of Texas at Dallas and Texas Woman’s University. The tour crew reached approximately 200 students, many of whom signed our Love Veg pledge to reduce or eliminate animal products from their diet.

Various partner organizations and individuals shared iAnimal at 30 events, reaching nearly 5,000 people worldwide.

Upcoming Highlights

Love Veg Mexico is releasing new recipes for Lent entitled “12 Recipes with A Touch of the Sea“.
