Havas MEDIA NETWORK: cut ties animal cruelty

Havas Media Network has teamed up with grocery stores Giant Food, The GIANT Company, Hannaford, and Stop & Shop. But these chains are facing a global animal cruelty scandal.

Owned by parent company Ahold Delhaize, these brands have broken their promises to stop supporting cages for hens and mother pigs.

Havas Media Network US President Greg James has said that “If you’re not aligning purpose to profit, then you’re probably not going to be as profitable.” Now it’s time to ask Mr. James to put action behind his words, and to have Havas cut ties with Ahold Delhaize and animal cruelty.

From 2024 to 2025, an Animal Equality investigator went undercover at a pig breeding facility in Kansas. This farm is linked to brands sold at Ahold Delhaize–parent company of Stop & Shop and Giant.

More than 10 years ago, Stop & Shop, Giant, and Hannaford pledged to remove cages for pregnant pigs in their U.S. supply chains. Ahold Delhaize—their parent company—reaffirmed these commitments in 2020. But their promise is unfulfilled.

Animal Equality’s investigations have exposed how animals suffer on factory farms.

Gestation crates crush pregnant pigs’ growing bodies. Many suffer from bloody sores as metal bars dig into their skin.
Pigs engage in repetitive, stress-induced behaviors. Many chew the air and bite the metal bars. Others climb upward to escape.
A pig wedges her head beneath the crate. She screams—trapped—until a worker finally intervenes.
Mother pigs give birth to premature piglets in their cages. These piglets rot on the floors behind their caged mothers, who can’t turn around to see them.

Hens trapped in battery cages lose their feathers from stress and from rubbing against the metal bars.
Hens have no more living space than a sheet of printer paper. They cannot even spread their wings.

A multi billion-dollar conglomerate should not be stalling on adopting basic, common-sense animal welfare standards. Footage of mother pigs and hens confined in cages reveals a disturbing truth: this practice is cruel and indefensible. It’s time for Ahold Delhaize to do the right thing and ban cages.
